Basis of our Recommendation

Punjab National Bank (PNB) is navigating a strategic transformation aimed at enhancing profitability and operational efficiency, as highlighted by management's focus on a higher-yielding RAM portfolio and a significant investment in digital initiatives. The bank's digital-first approach, with a technology capex budget of INR34 billion, is expected to drive future growth, particularly through new product launches and improved customer engagement. Despite facing a structural headwind from the upcoming ECL transition, management remains optimistic about maintaining a return on assets (RoA) above 1% and achieving a cost-to-income ratio of 47-48%. Vista's financial outlook reflects an anticipated acceleration in revenue growth, supported by disciplined growth strategies and a stable margin environment. The bank's strong asset quality and conservative lending profile further bolster its financial stability, aligning with Vista's valuation assessment that indicates the stock is attractively priced relative to intrinsic value. Industry dynamics, including improving pricing power and digital transformation trends among public sector banks, provide a favorable backdrop for PNB's growth trajectory. Over the next 12-24 months, key opportunities include expanding the RAM portfolio and leveraging digital capabilities, while watchpoints include the impact of rising government bond yields and the ECL transition on profitability
